Cara memberi nomor halaman di PDF, termasuk melewati sampul untuk skripsi dan laporanHow to add page numbers to a PDF, including skipping the cover for theses and reports
Your PDF has no page numbers, or numbering must start after the cover and preface? A guide to choosing the position, format, starting number and page range, with a worked example for a thesis.
Di halaman ini
Nomor halaman terlihat sepele, tetapi sangat membantu pembaca.
| Pengaturan | Pilihan umum | Saran |
|---|---|---|
Langkah memberi nomor halaman
- Klik Tambah nomor, lalu Unduh.
Bagaimana cara melewati sampul
Jalan keluarnya:
- Buat penomoran Romawi untuk bagian awal di pengolah kata sebelum dokumen diubah menjadi PDF, atau biarkan bagian awal tanpa nomor bila pedoman memperbolehkan.
- Cari halaman pertama Bab I di PDF. Misalnya, Bab I berada di halaman ke-9 file dan dokumen berisi 72 halaman.
- Pilih rentang halaman
9-72dan isi nomor awal 1.
- Gabungkan dulu, baru beri nomor. Penomoran akan berurutan dari awal hingga akhir. Ini cara yang paling aman. Lihat cara menggabungkan banyak file PDF jadi satu.
Nomor terlihat terlalu mencolok.
Page numbers look trivial, but they help readers a lot. A thesis examiner can point to "page 23" when giving notes, meeting attendees can jump straight to the page being discussed, and a printed document that gets scattered can be put back in order. The problem is that documents are often already PDFs by the time we notice they have no numbers, for example after merging several files or scanning.
The good news is that page numbers can be added directly to the PDF without going back to the word processor file.
Settings you need to decide
| Setting | Common choices | Suggestion |
|---|---|---|
| Position | Top or bottom; left, center or right | Bottom center for general documents; follow guidelines if any |
| Format | 1, 1 / N, Page 1 of N, - 1 - | 1 for theses and reports; Page 1 of N for contracts |
| Starting number | Any number | 1, or continuing from the previous part |
| Font size | Small to large | Slightly smaller than the body text |
| Distance from edge | In millimeters | Far enough not to get cut off when printed |
| Pages to number | All, skip the first page, or a range | Skip the cover; use a range for the main body |
The Page 1 of N format is useful for important documents such as agreements, because the recipient immediately knows if a page is missing.
Steps to add page numbers
- Open a numbering tool, for example Add Page Numbers on KASKOW.
- Click Choose file or drag and drop the PDF. You can also select many PDFs at once.
- Choose the Position from six options: top or bottom, each left, center or right.
- Choose the number Format.
- Set Start at, Font size, Distance from edge and Colour.
- Choose the pages: turn on Skip the first page (cover) or pick a custom range.
- Check the preview, which updates instantly every time you change a setting.
- Click Add numbers, then Download.
This tool works in your browser, so the document isn't uploaded. Your settings are also remembered on your device, so the next document can be numbered in the same style without setting everything again.
How skipping the cover works
When the skip-first-page option is on, the cover gets no number and numbering starts on the second page. The number shown on the second page is the number you enter in Start at.
- If the second page should be numbered 1, enter a starting number of 1.
- If the guidelines say the cover still counts but its number isn't shown, so the second page is numbered 2, enter a starting number of 2.
For the 1 / N or Page 1 of N formats, N is the last number printed. If the cover is skipped and the starting number is 1, a 20-page document will be numbered 1 to 19 with N = 19. Check the preview to make sure this is what you want.
Example: a thesis or report with front matter
Many campus guidelines ask for the front matter (title page, approval page, preface, table of contents) to use lowercase Roman numerals such as i, ii, iii, while the main chapters use ordinary numbers starting from 1. PDF numbering tools usually only use ordinary numbers, including the one on KASKOW. The workaround:
- Create the Roman numbering for the front matter in your word processor before converting the document to PDF, or leave the front matter unnumbered if the guidelines allow it.
- Find the first page of Chapter I in the PDF. For example, Chapter I is the 9th page of the file and the document has 72 pages.
- Choose the page range
9-72and enter a starting number of 1. - Check the preview on page 9: it should show 1. Check page 8 as well: it should have no number.
Always follow your campus or institution's writing guidelines first, including where the number goes. Some guidelines want the number at the bottom center on the first page of a chapter and at the top right on other pages. Cases like this are easier to set up in a word processor before the document becomes a PDF.
Documents made of several files
If a report is assembled from several files, there are two approaches:
- Merge first, then number. Numbering will run continuously from start to finish. This is the safest way. See how to merge multiple PDF files into one.
- Number each file with a different starting number. For example, the second file starts at 31 because the first file has 30 pages. This suits cases where each part is still sent separately.
If the page order isn't right yet, fix it before numbering, because printed numbers move with their pages. See how to reorder PDF pages.
Common problems
The number overlaps text or a footer. Increase the distance from the edge, or move the position, for example from bottom center to bottom right.
The number looks too prominent. Reduce the font size and choose dark grey instead of solid black.
The document already has old numbers. New numbers are printed on top of the page; they don't replace the old ones. Choose a different position or use a source file without numbers.
Numbers get cut off when printed. Many printers can't print right to the edge of the paper. Use a larger distance from the edge.
After adding numbers
Check a few random pages in the preview, especially the first numbered page and the last page. The document is then ready to send, or to pass on to another tool, for example to reduce its size before uploading it to a portal.
